That will only work for X programs and X displays not for terminals

Suresh... I don't think it's possible to do what you want to do... I
wanted to do something like that for mpg123 which I normally run in the
background... I came up with two solutions one was to redirect all output
to a fifo .. and the other was to run mpg123 in the quiet mode

you can always skip tracks by 

kill -s 2 `pidof mpg123`

If this what you were wanting to do !
