your modem may not necessarily be the PCMCIA type. Where do you plug in
the phonejack? If it's a PCMCIA card that you plug it in, then it has to
b active obviously.

as an afterthought, here's some news. I'm using Sid and I spend the
day finding out that simply feeding in the IP, mask, and GW is not
enough, you might need to specify the broadcast address too to get the
network going. That's on a xircom_tulip_cb
