The best solution for you is strings ... it'll convert the files to text
format.. and you can use your favorite editor to edit it!
and the command comes with your distro...
one the prompt just type strings filename
string Patient1.doc > patient1.txt
and voila you are on ur way!
(you will have to remove a bit of junk at the top and bottom but otherwise
the file should be readable without loss of data)
