Hi all

I installed Mandrake 8 on i810E, mercury kobian board. But the system is very
slow. It takes more than 5 minutes to reach login prompt. It's 128MB RAM.

Hdparm figures are 92MBps/11Mbps. That's good enough. CPU is 733MHz.

I tried disabling udma but to no avail. The system takes almost 3 minutes to
reach login prompt in RHL6.2. Services like xfs and linuxconf takes noticably
more time to start.

I can see that the base kernel loads *very* fast. But once it reaches to loading
services etc. it just crowls.

The installation of Mandrake 8 was pain. It took 5 minutes to insert ide-cd
module. Next 5 minutes to insert iso-fs module and next 15 minutes to load
mandrake installer. Then the system was as fast as expected barring the
framebuffer vga graphics and flicker(Till it configured X)

I wonder why it took so long. It booted from the CD with a good enough speed. It
installed the packages with good enough speed. But to load modules it take more
than 10 minutes. My rest of installtion was finished in 15 minutes.

In bios system is blazing fast but once it boots and reaches applications, down
to knees. Konsole in KDE took a minute to start. I didn't dare to launch
konqueror.

I also tried diabling pnp OS. No use.

My thoughts.
1)I have a non-udma cable for CDROMJ which is on hdc and udma cable for hdd
which is hda. Is it making some difference? I plan to put both hdd/cdrom on
sigle cable. I have yet to try that.
2)I would like to try the system at lower FSB i.e. at 100MHz. But there is no
option to do so. Perhaps it may behave well at lower speeds.

Any suggestions? I have a system for the sake of it, but it's barely usable.
Need help desparately.

 Shridhar
