the default support for VIA 686 cards are buggy in the default kernel's
sound modules. I had to jack up the mixer to 100% and pipe the output to a
big'ish stereo at max volume to get a faint whisper.
Switch to alsa, on them via cards run fine. About your system hanging, i
have not faced that, but what does happen is the system does not shutdown
cleanly. This happens because of trying to takedown incorrectly
initialised modules.
