I too have that problem with xmms. Whilst it plays, you open another
  file/dir, or do something, and it will start to stammer. But the same
  thing isn't too for kmp3/freeamp/mp3blaster/mpg123 etc. So, I just
  avoid xmms. mp3blaster in an xterm could be as good.
