Accessing /bin - I don't have a problem. Changing - or doing funny
things - I do mind. That is why the default permissions of linux (or
for that matter, many Unices) are ok with me.

Every user requires read/execute permissions to /bin - otherwise even
simple things like ls won't work. Your worry is the 'w' bit for others
(and the 'w' bit on the files inside /bin) - and that is turned off by
default.
