you can run top to check out your system load. But its unlikely that your
problem lies there. But have a lookout for any stray scp related
processes. I do tend to get similar behaviour if i am connected
for long. Reconnecting solves it temporarily, no reboot rquired. You can
set up pppd to takedown the connection if its idle for some timeout
period.
