it is very unlikely that the ping latency is because of process load. But
have a look out for hung ssh related processes or anyone consuming
exorbitant cpu or memory ( <shift> M in top sorts the process according
to memory). Take a look at ifconfig's output as well for any errors and
ping with shorter payload like

ping -s 10 <host>

Sometimes the ppp connection just gets bad and one has to reconnect.

Another unrelated thing I noted is you are running sshd. I dont think that
would be necessary. So unless you want someone else to connect to your pc,
you can disable it. But its pretty secure so no worries.
