It works for me here with kernel 2.4.5 - i810.
XFree 4.0.3

agp support is included in the i810 kernel module.

debian:/dev# l /dev/agpgart*
ls: /dev/agpgart*: No such file or directory
debian:/dev#

What about i810 module ? Is it loaded ?

Have u compiled support for i810 while compiling the kernel ?

#
# Ftape, the floppy tape device driver

# CONFIG_FTAPE is not set
CONFIG_AGP=y
# CONFIG_AGP_INTEL is not set
CONFIG_AGP_I810=y
# CONFIG_AGP_VIA is not set

# CONFIG_DRM_GAMMA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON is not set
CONFIG_DRM_I810=m
# CONFIG_DRM_MGA is not set

I have got the following in /etc/modules.conf :-

alias char-major-10-175 agpgart

Check all these things. Your problem will be solved.
