There is another term related to this which is called "caching". Typical
proxy servers like squid can do caching of the web content that is
accessed by the clients. So, if you have a well populated cache, then
there would definitely be a performance difference.
Connections through IP MASQ can start dieing if you dont have enough
B/W. On the other hand, the proxy server would manage your connections
appropriately.
So, the experience depends on a lot of factors.
