Guide? Nobody. Install linux (and remove windows from your machine), keep
working on it, running as many services on your own as you can. You'd make a
pretty fair sysadmin quite soon.

Salary = quite high compared to (say) a VB programmer - as sysadmins are a
bit rarer. Work hours = irregular, tend to be far longer than normal office
hours.

The linux sysadmin guide (SAG) and network admin guide (NAG) - both available
for download at several locations (and also on several distro CDs)
