gtkyahoo also has options for sound ! RTFM!!

But whether sounds are cool or not is a matter of opinion! 

After I installed festival I went about changed everything on my machine
to say things to me using tts ... it was cool for some time.. but after
that it became plain irritating! ditto for sounds... imagine the cacophony
of three or more friends messaging you the moment you come online !
