The problem here is NOT the distro. It is the 2.4.x kernel. On
8 mb of RAM - even woody or sid (on debian) is unlikely to run
with the 2.4.x kernel. Debian "potato" will run because of the 
2.2.x kernel, or even woody with 2.2.x kernel ...
