Just check following:

a) If lp0 or lp1 is being  recognised by your kernel (do a dmesg
and check). Printer support is to be compiled into kernel either
static or loadable.

b)  set up  printer using  magicfilter or  apsfilter. Unlike  RH
there is  no printtool utility in  debian. Default /etc/printcap
may not work.
