Requests go like this:
Windows --> Samba --> Base OS.
Samba is merely a translator between Windows and your base OS, in this
case Linux (think of Samba as a proxy, if that helps).
So, for Linux, samba is a client, while for the samba server, the
windows machine is a client.

IIRC, that is the limit on kernels 2.2.x, with 2.4.x this is dependent
on the amount of RAM you have.
It could be due to memory problems, or just that too many other
processes are running. Samba basically asked for a huge block, got 1024
and made do with those.
