In my Debian box if I modify /etc/issue and logout, the changes are
permanent. My /etc/issue goes like this
Debian GNU/\s 2.4.3-12 \n on \l
the output is
Debian GNU/Linux 2.4.3-12 kumarayil on tty3
kumarayil login:
