But that doesnt seem to be the full story: I have the same linux on
another machine with the same configuration at home, and there there is
no problem. So I would like to know how I can go about checking what is
wrong with one machine and not the other.

Another problem: Sound does not work when I login as a user, but it does
work when I login as root. (In my home machine, it works both as root
and user).

I wonder if these two are related.

I will appreciate if you can shed more light.

Kill all unnecessary services and processes on your box. Also try adding some 
ram and see if performance improves.
