Better than scandisk. For badblocks program to be run, the
preferred utility for ext2 file system is e2fsck

e2fsck -c -p -v /dev/hdN (where N is the No of the partition)

Note: The partition  should  not be mounted when this is run.
If this is on your / partition you need to do this from  your
rescue disk.

fsck will also do, but not invoke badblocks.

Yes, both can be simultaneously installed and will not be a
hinderance to each other. Caldera may be having  an utility
for switching WMs ... in case not, the route is through the
file called .xinitrc in your home directory.  I  have put a
sample .xinitrc in one of the replies today ...

requirement to read a  specific page, rather than the default.
e.g. whatis man will reveal man (1), man (7) and man.conf (5),
and what you want is man (7); type in :-  7 man
