You can use it to manage your intranet as well.
You can use it to replace /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, nis+,
/etc/smbpasswd....
LDAP is a read often, write less data store.
You could put in config files there, and generate config files from the
stored data.
Stuff like addressbooks, telephone directories, etc is ideally stored in
a LDAP database.
LDAP should not be used where you need to write often (ecommerce sites
for transactions, snmpget result storage,....).
