LDAP is used for distributing heirarchical information.  One
application is corporate information (departments, locations, users,
infrastructure, etc).  Another (the obvious one) is a directory
service for e-mail addresses and other user info.  You can easily use
it to implement a single-sign-on for your whole organisation.  And, of
course, VishwaKarma uses it extensively ;-)
