The kernel 2.4 with SuSE (Professional Edtn) is
perfectly OK. I am using this from the time it was
released, I have faced no issues in particular. What
is the problem faced by you?

In SuSE it is mk_initrd and not mkinitrd.

I had configured my Motorola SM56 PCI Modem quite
comfortably with SuSE, the links for which were
provided a no. of times on this List.
