Generally, it is NOT a good idea, to paly around with +s. It
is much easier through  sudo, as  Srikant  stated. Secondly,
using shortcut methods, invariably spoil habits.

Agreed, the man page of  sudo is a bit too terse ... to make 
life easier with sudo with a full How-Do-I, you  may like to
