The probable source of errors are:

a) Inappropriate syntax for fsck or e2fsck
b) Corruption of your / or /etc files.

The best recourse would be to boot through a  rescue
disk (stand alone), if you have one for  your distro
or one of the floppy based mini-distros (tomsrtbt or
alfalinux). Once you have booted, do:

o fsck /dev/hdxN (where x is a,b etc, N is 1,2 etc).
  Repeat for all your partitions in turn. Select all
  defauilt answers in the repair process.
  
o boot normally ... should work ...

o if not, boot through rescue disk again,  mount the
  partition where you have your data, move  them  to
  another partition/ floppy/ CDROM ...
