Fine - it should do that on redhat

Because slackware doesn't have this /etc/rc.d/init.d/whatever
[start|stop|restart] concept.

Which is the default.  I guess the redhat script will call apachectl with the
necessary options.

All these are paths customized for redhat (which changes a few things -
especially paths etc) from the default apache.

Does tomcat.conf exist in /etc/apache?

Which would break starting and stopping apache in slackware.

That PCQ article is customized for redhat.

Instead, read the tomcat install / configure instructions for what you need
to do ... slackware's apache is more or less stock apache 1.3.20 (btw go to
apache 1.3.22 while you are at it).
