Sorry for the delayed reply. Was out of town for better part of this week. Just returned. This maybe a distro specific query. On my box (Slack) "as" is part of GNU-binutils package and NOT gcc. To compile the kernel, as86 is needed (not "as" per se). AFAIK, gcc and as are unrelated issues. I have not installed pure gcc for ages.I have been on egcs. To know what is on your box do: gcc -v ( "rpm -q" will not give contents of /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-.../.../specs which has the details). If you have egcs 1.1.2 or beyond, it is stable enough, and most distros have the necessary patches. "as" may be an independent portion on your distro. Probably with binutils package, along with things like ld, ar, size and strip. Just check that out. GNU assembler (as) needs to be configured for the target platform during compile, if you want to compile from source. Do "as --version" and check out your version. Version 2.9.x is stable enough. Suggested action to replace "as" only: o Find out which package has "as" for your distro o Selectively download that package from your distro size o Selectively replace "as" and "ld" only from the download, instead of updating the whole package.
