Keeping bootable OSs on extended partitions is not a good idea
since there is only one boot record for all the extended logi-
cals put together. If you are considering full re-install at a
later stage, please keep this in mind.

Which variety of Win is this ? Can you run it off a Win rescue
floppy disk ?

If you re-install Windows without errors, the MBR would have
a M$ boot record. On next re-boot, you should be in Win, since
the Win install process, by force places itself on MBR.

This indicates a failure of successful Win-9x install. MSDOS.
SYS is a hidden, RO, system file put by the installation pro-
cess. In Win-9x, this is a text file. Did you tinker around
with it by any chance ? In any case, to get into a proper Win
boot, you can do the following:
o Boot through a Win-9x rescue disk
o Do: fdisk /mbr
This should put the correct system bootup files in place and
enable a Windows-only boot from HDD.

There are two options here. Once you have a normal boot into
Win from the HDD; you may:
a) Opt to continue booting through Win, and achieve a dual
boot into Linux/ Win using loadlin. OR;
b) Opt to dual boot through LILO, provided, your Win is other-
wise booting flawlessly. To enable a LILO dual boot, you
need to do the following:
o Boot through Linux rescue disk (not boot/ root disk)
o Edit /etc/lilo.conf and check that the entries are corr-
ect for both the OSs.
o Run: '/sbin/lilo -v' to place LILO boot record on MBR.

To change the host name of your RH machine, as root edit file
/etc/hostname. Secondly, place in file /etc/sysconfig/network
'HOSTNAME=hostname_string', else on reboot it will revert to
localhost.localdomain! Its a RH quirk !
