This is hard core stuff ! Even after over 5 years
on Linux, I am still not familiar !!!

For most things, stock kernels are good enough. You
need to compile if some component of your hardware
is not supported, or you want to install some major
software like Oracle ...

Okay ...

The kernel is at the heart of Linux. It is the first
thing to load, recognises devices on your box and
thereafter provides services necessary for machine
I/O. After the kernel is loaded, the init process to
load the rest of the system commences.

Where does it lie ? It varies from installation to
installation. The usual filename is vmlinuz, zImage,
bzImage etc. For LILO boots it is kept in /boot. For
loadlin boots, the file (vmlinuz) needs to be on the
M$ partition. For boot disks on floppy ... and so on

In a multiuser system you may like to monitor all su attempts.
Edit /etc/login.defs and edit SULOG_FILE as follows:
SULOG_FILE /var/log/sulog ... (name of file to hold info)
