Caldera Openlinux 3.1 comes with kernel 2.4.4.

Give more details. I have tried installation of caldera just for fun to see
what kind of distro they have come up with :-)

Do you get the screen where lizard tried to autodetect your hardware ?
When I installed it only got stuck up for a long time at detecting
installation media. That is most probably because of LG CD-ROM drive. After
installation I had to disable DMA of CD-ROM in order to use it.
