There won't be a significant change from 2.2.12 to 2.2.14
Keep to the pld one, unledd you want to jump to 2.4.x ...

Which is the distro you are using. Most have their own re-
commended method of doing things ... ofcourse  you  can do
from a tarball, but you must backup your existing .o files
before taking the plunge. The kernel-HOWTO is quite exhau-
stive and is quite okay for generic updates ... Unless you
are dead sure, it is better to go  by  the recommendations
of your distro.

Note, the copying bit is only after  compilation.  Nothing
needs  moving except for the new kernel  and  the .o files
to respective /boot and /lib/modules/kernel-version/
