IF you are using windoze, then usually the software that comes w/ the CDwriter will have an option to burn iso images. > i need to purchase a cd-writer *urgently*, however i am a total newbie in > this regard. need help on: > > 1. selection criteria for cd-writers (write-speed, rewrite-speed, read-speed > / buffer memory / ide, scsi?...) Almost all recent cdwriters confirm to MMC so all *should* work w/ linux. Most come w/ a 2 mb buffer which is quite sufficient. Scsi would be more expensive, though to use *any* cdwriter in linux, you *will* need scsi-emulation. You will ofcourse not be able to burn multisession CDs if you want to use a 2.4 kernel. The author of cdrecord Jorg Schilling has some differences w/ the scsi drivers (actually w/ the writers of the scsi drivers) in the 2.4.x kernel and refuses to change his code or offer a patch. > 2. any information on known brands which are good candidates (or even the > worst ones which i could simply avoid) ideally my budget should be *not more > than* rs. 6000/- i am a poor student ;-(( I use a Samsung Combo CDRW/DVD. I also doubt you will get anything for that kind of budget, but look around, maybe you'll get lucky. > 3. help on burning redhat iso images onto cd-r's under non-unix os see above. > pls. note: i am the proud owner of an antique pentium one-166 mhz, 32 mb ram > system. would this be a potential problem to write cd's considering a slow > cpu and low ram? Should not be a problem for burning the CDs *if* you were working in linux :). I don't know about a certain OS from Redmond USA. One of the pages on CDburning mentions the author using a 486 w/ some modest ram (I forget the exact link). > want to switch over to linux at the earliest. your help will be greatly > appreciated. I would say you're in trouble if you think you can install RH 7.2 on on a P166 w/ 32 m ram. By all means give it a shot, let us know the end result. May I suggest an alternative distro, maybe debian ? regards, hth, Sharukh. -- Dr. Sharukh K. R.
