Is it a winmodem or external modem?

Have you put redhat lilo on MBR? Try going into text mode and passing 
root=/dev/hdan option so that it finds the proper root partition for redhat?

Switching distro for a modem? I thought there are better ways out..

P.S. Dump rediffmail and come to yahoo etc. where you can use POP, use your own 
mail client and format a message a bit.
