I do not play games. However, making a reply ... may help to
keep this thread alive. To me it looks as if  you  have only
two binaries, xheretic and vgaheretic. By  all probabilities
xaheretic is a common file run by these. Please do a file on
each of these and crosscheck.

You should be able to run xheretic with that command.  It is
unlikely that xaheretic will run. xheretic  should  run as a
normal user like any other X application.

This may be true for vgaheretic (but not xheretic). There is
a problem with all svgalib  programs, wherein  for  security
considerations, root privileges may be necessary ... In case
yours  is a  stand alone box, you  may  consider setting the
suid bit (viz. chmod +s vgaheretic), which will  enable  you
to run this program as a mere mortal !
