When I suggested samba, I thought he wanted to deploy this thing on a lan
rather than on a mixed (read: windows and unix both) cluster of servers
connected to the net.

If he said 'server', samba is the last thing i'd have suggested.

LOST #088        -**< Sub : Kernel compilation steps (Debian) >**-
1. #cd /usr/src/linux  2. #make-kpkg clean 3. #make menuconfig
4. #make-kpkg --revision=<put here revision no.>  kernel-image
After compilation is over you  will get a deb file in /usr/src 
with all modules you had selected during make menuconfig.
Install the kernel using dpkg -i <deb file name>
Change /etc/lilo.conf and than run lilo -v
For detailed explanation man make-kpkg
