squid is quite resource hungry and will all the ram and hard disk space under the box. Allot maximum ram to squid. Use only SCSI disk with about 20 mb per user Keep your ipchains short and sweet. I have tested squid as transparent proxy on Pentium III with 2x9. GB scsi , and 400 mb of ram for about 60 active users on a 2 mbps link. and believe me it rocks!!
