Generally none of the applications are disturbed ,by kernel changes.Just check out what applications,that are important to you,without which you cannot survive,and read out those doc's of those applications.
But there are some applications which might not work at all classic example iptables(even though this specific application cannot be called so..because this relies totally on the kernel space..) when we downgrade from 2.4.x to 2.2.x.
