"Linux for desktop" - That, in my opinion, is going to be one of the
hottest things to happen in next 6 to 12 months. That %^&$#@ (cannot
even call it an OS) is going to be literally thrown out of windows and
linux will be on the desktop with a bang.
I would suggest some steps:
1. Stop having doubts about Linux;
2. Get hold of an distro from another user or the nearest LUG (which
will also have users - like this mailing list - to help you in teething
troubles;
3. Install Linux and Open-Office on 1 machine;
4. Use this machine for : a). Word processing, b). Work-sheets, c).
Presentations (what you might be doing on the office suite), d). Browse
the net (there are more than one browsers), e) E-mail, f) Yahoo (or
similar) Messenger g) Chat and whatever else you do on the net, h)
Listen to music and see your VCDs, i) do your programming in C or any
other toold, including real visual tools................ there is plenty
more that you can do, but this should be more than good to start with;

Do this for few days and you will never want to go back to the current
softwares;

If you cannot get hold of the distro and OpenOffice nearer to you, send
me your postal address and I will mail the CDs to you from Delhi.

I can assure you from my experience that you will never regret following
this friendly advice.
