Did a bit of RTFM'ing ... from the Kernel HOWTO ...

--snip--
After you have a new kernel that seems to work the way you want it to,
it's time to install it. Most people use LILO (Linux Loader) for this.
`make bzlilo' will install the kernel, run LILO on it, and get you all
ready to boot, BUT ONLY if lilo is configured in the following way on your
system: kernel is /vmlinuz, lilo is in /sbin, and your lilo config
(/etc/lilo.conf) agrees with this.
--snip--

Didn't know about this either! :-(

Anyways .. my kernel is not in /vmlinuz so I guess it wouldn't work on my
box.

Will try the "make install" sometime when I'm feeling really adventurous!

Somehow feel a lot more secure copying the files by hand and adding the
relevant entries and symlinks... I like to know whats happening in the
/etc directory.
