I must ask, why the downgrade to 2.4.4? It was not a particularly noteworthy kernel. 2.4.9 is the last kernel before a major vm code change.
One thing you did not mention was the procedure you followed _after_ the manual edit. You will need to do a make dep again. Then the make bzImage ... Normally, I will do a test compile on a custom config. If it make OK, I'll copy out the .config to a file elsewhere and the do a make mrproper. This will do a full clean of all links and build parts. Copy back the .config and do make oldconfig, make dep, make bzImage. I run a patched XFS-enabled kernel, so I don't run the stock RedHat kernels after an install. Also, you could install the new redhat kernel upgrade rpm. It will allow the rpm upgrade of several X packages for some better support and performance. Also, some of the driver parts change names a bit. It may be needed to do a make menuconfig or make xconfig to select your net cards with a different kernel.
