when you start pine, it looks for a file named mbox in your home
directory. if it finds said file, it assumes that you want to use
~user/mbox rather than /var/spool/mail/user, and moves all messages from
/var/spool/mail/user to ~user/mbox. If you don't want this to happen,
just merge the two files into /var/spool/mail/user and delete mbox.
