It's quite possible that u didnot manually edit the resolv.conf file to add the relevant ip addresses but u must have still given the ip addresses via a gui program which in turn would have done the same thing behind the scene. I'd be in for a shock if u got ur dial up connection to the internet working without giving ur ISP's primary and secondary nameserver's ip address. Assume this clarifies a few things at ur end.
