Hello Sirs,
I have to do something about the way PCQ Linux 7.1 is
handling my sound. The astonishing thing is that at
times it plays music and does other tasks involving
sound and at times it COMPLETELY FAILS to play ANY
kind of sound!! I first tried to make Linux redetect
my soundcard by running sndconfig as root and most of
the time it said "/dev/dsp resource busy or
unavailable"
I have the Original Intel 815EEA i815 motherboard
which has an integrated sound card.
During the setup of PCQ Linux , my motherboard was
correctly detected, the soundcard was detected as
a AC'97 ...
Audio, video and game contollers under KDE System
Control says that there is an "Unknown Device
(Multimedia audio controller)
Under "Information>Soundcard" it says "Sorry,No
information about soundcard!"
But often I am able to play music on my system and the
sound quality is very good. But unfortunately,it's not
often that sound plays on my system.XMMS puts up a
dialog box asking me to check that if my soundcard was
configured properly and that no other service was
blocking my soundcard. KDE Media Player informs me
that /dev/dsp is busy and then crashes.
As for now,the stupid thing that I am doing is booting
my machine and logg'in as a normal user,doing a
"startx" and checking if the sound comes. If it does
not then I reboot again.I keep on doing this process
till ound comes off my speakers ! And let me tell you
- after about 3 reboots SOUND DOES COME ;)
I cannot undertand the nature of my problem.I checked
my local documentation and logs.I checked for IRQ
problems.Often the sound is scratchy,perhaps I need
updated drivers. Is it so ? Please specify how I update
my drivers ?
For your perusal I have pasted portions of my "dmesg"
and"messages' logs. Please go through them to judge the
nature of the problem:

post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f
/etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f
/etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
Can anyone of you make out what's wrong with my system
and what can I do to stop and resolve it ?
Thank
You for your patience in reading this long mail
