Just open up the protocol and let us decide which client we want to
use. I don't consider Yahoo (or any other company, organisation,
person or government) competent to make decisions on whether I should
use a console or an X client, gtk or Qt or AW or Motif libraries,
single-click or double-click or right-click or or keyboard shortcuts,
etc.
Speaking for myself, I'm planning to dump my Yahoo messaging
altogether unless there's some support from Yahoo for free software
clients in a reasonable time, and encourage the people I converse with
to switch to Jabber or some other hassle-free protocol too.
