Just preserve the .config file - both for 2.2.x and 2.4.x ... no need to 
preserve the entire damned kernel I think?

After that, you'd have to make sure your X setup is tuned to use framebuffer 
(and maybe increase the default font size - framebuffer makes for really 
small fonts).

To change the bindings of ctrl+alt+del to  "shutdown -h now", 
instead of  "shutdown -r now", edit  /etc/inittab, and change 
-r to -h ... The altered line should look something like this
ca:12345:ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t1 -a -h now
