I would suggest getting a distro like immunix which has non-executing stack binaries. I think gcc/glibc has a patch that prevents execution on stack. So it stops buffer overflows right in there. I recommend you to trim down your server install and compile everything with this patched gcc, including kernel/gcc and glibc as the minimum... Rest of things can wait, this is rather important..
