Hi,

I'm currently helping a certain non-profit organization with developing
a really sturdy linux box. These boxes would be used in a remote part
of a certain third world country (India would be tech mecca by comparison).

We plan to have a dot matrix printer attached to the linux box. The
print spooling software will probably be lpr(ng) or cups. I have no
experience with dot matrix printers. Can someone tell me how printing
to dot matrix printers happens? Are the fonts in the firmware of the
printer? Or are they sent to the printer via PCL/PS/control language?
Do any of you have experience printing international characters on dot
matrix printers attached to linux boxen?
