Your problem is simply this :
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html#q16

and

for fixing this ...
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html#q21

Worked for me at least.

But honestly speaking the X server itself is sufficient for what you need.
All you want is to be able to access your linux desktop on your windows
machine, remotely. So just use a windows based x-client.

Like I mention earlier, I liked the the xmanager from www.xmanager.com
You can download the fully functional evaluation from here ...
http://download.com.com/3000-2340-6128455.html?legacy=cnet

All you need to do after install is click on xstart and fill in the host
name as well as username/password for the linux system.
It will open up a terminal window for you.
Once in it, just type : /usr/bin/X11/xterm -ls -display (Substitute window
machine's IP here):0

or replace the 0 with 1 etc...in case you are already running a X session on
the linux server itself.

Just type gnomexmms to fire up a gnome desktop on the windows machine.
That is all

Works like a charm.

Regards,
Abhi
