There could be many reasons why you could get that
message. It basically means that your kernel is not
able to talk properly with your hard disk. Some of the
reasons why that should happen could be :
1. Your kernel has a bug in it (2.4.7 I do believe had
a filesystem bug).
2. Your motherboard has gone kaput - unlikely but
possible.
3. The cable connecting your motherboard to the hard
disk is loose or faulty. Possible if it has been
attached recently or couple of years ago.
4. Your hard disk is dying on you - probably the worst
possible scenario but very likely.
Things you could do :
1. Unplug that hard disk before you end up trashing
it. Grab another hard disk and install kernel 2.4.18
on it.
2. Make sure the cables are connected properly. If
they have been around for a couple of years better
replace them.
3. Go to your hard disk manufacturer's website and
download whatever utility they supply to verify the
hard disc's integrity. Do understand that running that
utility might cause more harm in case of a damaged
disc.
