I do the following :

1. Start fetchmail with -L option, for ex.

fetchmail -v -a -L /var/log/fetchmail.log

Remember to first create this file -> touch /var/log/fetchmail.log

2. Put the following in your startup script. On debian (/etc/init.d/rcS)

tail -f /var/log/fetchmail.log >> /dev/tty9&

Now you can watch the status of fetchmail on tty9. If you are in 'X' , than
open a console and start tail -f /var/log/fetchmail.log there to view the
status.
