I have 2.4 kernel + 4.1.0 X
(and you have 2.2 kernel + 3.3.6 X.)

I'll tell you what I have done to get X run on fbdev.
I enabled vesafb just as u did.
In /etc/X11/XF86Congig i changed the driver from
"trident" to "fbdev"
(my card is trident btw).
and did "startx" to run X on fbdev.

maybe you need to change fbdev's resolution during
boot or upgrade your X for it to work.
